This Rioja is medium-bodied with aromas of red cherry accented by flowers and fall leaves. On the finish, additional notes of leather and stewed red fruits lead into velvety tannins. It is not too traditional nor too modern stylistically.
Wine Folly:
Tempranillo (p. 175) This bottle had all the cherry the book predicted. Its youth kept that cherry on the red side and fended off some of the secondary notes one might expect, no cedar or dill here, rather fresher younger flavors and aromas.
Northeast Spain - Rioja Reserva (p. 280) This wine did not spend the time in the barrel to earn the "Reserva" label, as my first wine of the week did. Thus, this bottle leaned more into the red fruit than oak or black pepper. If it lacked some of the complexity of the Campo Viejo (my last blog), it made up for it with the robust fruit notes, typical of northeast Spain.
My Review:
The was a great Rioja, if on the young side, that paired well with the sweet acidity of wood fired pizza. The char of the wood oven provided the wood-oak flavors that another three years in a barrel may have given this wine.
