Tasting - Campo Viejo Reserva Rioja

Name:Campo Viejo Reserva Rioja
Variety:Tempranillo
Region:Rioja
Country:Spain
Year:2018
Price:$12.99

Winery Review:

An elegant expression of premium Rioja vines made from Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. Aged for 3 years as a minimum. 18 months in American and French oak barrels and 18 more in bottle. The end result is rounded, flavoursome and well-balanced wine.

Wine Folly:

Tempranillo (p. 175) This wine exhibits the strong black cherry taste signature to a Tempranillo from Spain's Rioja region. The Campo Viejo also reflects the black pepper and brown sugar typical of a Tempranillo. Absent from this bottle are the dill notes the book predicts for this wine.

Northeast Spain - Rioja Reserva (p. 280) The Rioja region yields rich Tempranillo wines with strong cherry and vanilla notes and this wine is no exception. "Reserva" indicates a three year aging process, including 12 months in a barrel. This bottle shows it maturity in deep flavors and notes of oak.

My Review:

This bottle is an awesome way to experience a hearty Spanish wine with some maturity. In three short year the Campo's strong cherry notes gave way to complex vanilla, pepper, cedar and oak. Would drink again.

I tasted this wine on its own.
